Apple Announces New iPhone 15 Models & Features

The details of the anticipated iPhone 15 have officially been released!

In the new line up we see an iPhone 15 (6.1″), iPhone 15 Plus (6.7″), iPhone 15 Pro (6.1″) and iPhone 15 Pro Max (6.7″).

In a design change, Apple’s latest iPhone 15 Pro models have embraced aerospace-grade titanium, heralding better durability and weight. These Pro models stand as the lightest in Apple’s Pro lineup to date, marking a step change to the iPhone Pro range.

One addition exclusive to the Pro models is the introduction of a customisable action button, a  feature that supplants the traditional mute switch. This innovative button allows users to initiate voice memos, launch the camera, activate shortcuts, or perform a myriad of other functions, making it a versatile tool that adapts to your needs. Its presence also mitigates the risk of accidental muting, ensuring uninterrupted communication.

Apple offers a palette of four colours for the iPhone 15 Pro models – pristine white, classic black, blue, and titanium. In contrast, the non-Pro variants shine with a spectrum of brighter hues, including pink, yellow,  green, blue, and black. Apple has integrated these colours into the back glass, giving it a textured, matte finish that enhances both aesthetics and grip.

While the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus maintain the tradition of not featuring Apple’s always-on display with ProMotion support, they make a bold statement with a peak brightness of 2000 nits. This remarkable feature ensures that your screen remains legible even in the brightest sunlight, doubling the brightness capabilities of their predecessors, the iPhone 14 models.

The screen sizes remain consistent with the previous range, offering a choice between 6.1 inches or 6.7 inches. However, the Pro models now boast slimmer bezels, enhancing the visual appeal and handling experience, making the iPhone 15 Pro a device that combines style and functionality.

iPhone 15 Specs

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are equipped with a 48-megapixel camera, a substantial improvement over the 12-megapixel shooter found in the iPhone 14. Accompanying this upgrade is a new 2x telephoto option, expanding your zoom capabilities significantly. This enhancement eliminates the need to exclusively shoot in portrait mode; instead, simply focus, and it will capture depth information, allowing you to effortlessly transform your shot into a portrait later within the Photos app.

Both phones are driven by the A16 Bionic chip, a familiar presence from the iPhone 14 Pro, and Apple assures users of all-day battery life.

As anticipated, the Lightning port on all four iPhone 15 models has been substituted with USB-C. This transition aligns with recent changes in EU regulations, mandating the adoption of this universal standard across small electronic devices. This means you’ll have the convenience of charging most, if not all, of your Apple devices using a single cable.

This year, the Pro models boast truly remarkable cameras. While the sensor maintains its impressive 48-megapixel resolution, it’s notably larger compared to the iPhone 15. This upgrade provides users with a broader range of focal lengths and next-generation portrait capabilities, featuring a remarkable two-fold improvement in low-light performance.

In particular, the iPhone 15 Pro incorporates a 3x telephoto zoom, but the Pro Max pushes the boundaries further with a 5x optical telephoto zoom. With a substantial 120mm focal length and a sensor that’s 25% larger than the one found in the 15 Pro, the Pro Max delivers exceptional optical performance.

At a glance the main new features will include:

  • The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will run on an A16 Bionic chip while the new A17 Bionic will power the iPhone 15 Pro models.
  • The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus joins the iPhone 15 Pro models in featuring a Dynamic Island cutout instead of a notch.
  • All four iPhone 15 models will switch from Lightning to USB-C connectivity.
  • The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will feature the 48MP main camera Apple added to last year’s iPhone 14 Pro models.
  • Aerospace-grade titanium frame for Pro models for lightness and durability (the lightest Pro models ever, according to Apple).
  • The iPhone 15 Pro models come in four colours – white, black, blue and natural
  • The Non-Pro models come in much brighter – pink, yellow, green, blue, and black.
  • New telephoto zoom lens for Pro models (iPhone 15 to zoom x3 times optically whilst the Pro Max to 5x)
  • All day battery life (iPhone 15 Plus has a bigger battery, as you would expect, given that it has a bigger screen).
